Implementing Service Learning

IMPLEMENTING SERVICE LEARNING

GETTING STARTED

Before the semester consider your course and learning outcomes. Ask yourself which of the outcomes would best be demonstrated/taught/understood through a community service project.
  1. Identify a community service site. Talk with the volunteer coordinator at your service site about your course and learning outcome(s) that you will be focusing on. Together plan a service project that will at once meet the needs of your community partner and your course requirements. Be sure that your project can be completed before the end of the semester.

  2. Write your assignment and your syllabus. It is essential that your SL project be included among your first day handouts. Be sure to specify how the assignment fits into your grading scheme. Include the SL project deadlines in your course schedule. For details on types of reflection assignments, see the district Service Learning Faculty Handbook.

  3. Have your students who will participate in SL complete the Service Learning Assignment Form, notarize the release statement, and submit it to you before beginning their service hours. We have notaries on campus.

  4. Have your students complete the top of the Service Learning Agreement and Log  which asks them to detail how their service project will meet one or more of the learning objectives in your course. Have them use the lower half to track their service hours. Have the volunteer coordinator initial and sign their form to verify their service.

  5. By the end of the semester, have students complete their reflection assignment and submit their final log of service hours to you for credit. Submit your roster of service learners, their hours and their service sites to the Service Learning Coordinator to ensure that you and they receive recognition for participation in the program.

  6. If you choose to request feedback from the community partner about the program's success or the student's participation, you may use the Community Partner Feedback Form or the Student Evaluation Form

  7. In order for the college to properly track service learning, at semester's end, be certain to fill out the Tracking Service Learning Form.  This required form should be turned in to the Service Learning Advisory Committee.
