Susie K. Harrison Artist Statement

Liminal is a term describing a pause in time between the familiar present and a future change.  Standing at a threshold of transition, one often struggles to relate to the unfolding process.  There may be the realization that previous boundaries are no longer relevant. In the Western culture many life stages are celebrated.

Transformations at midlife, however, are often a crucial but silent voyage.  An increasing busy pace in my life created a desire to honor silence.  Practicing mental silence and physical stillness opened time to rest, heal and learn. Adverse events in this period of my life became portals to creative growth.  Creating a sense of intimate space in a specific moment is an important facet of my work.  I am currently investigating the different faces of silences as they pertain to women.  Significant aspects of this series include natural, calm moments juxtaposed with “dark silences”.  An emerging, universal passage is evolving as women of this time are sharing their voices.  The silence is too loud not to be heard.
