MC Theatre Makes the Bed with The Sleeper by Catherine Butterfield
Lone Star College–Montgomery Actors Workshop presents The Sleeper by Catherine Butterfield, set for a November 16-19 run in the Performing Arts Lab (Room T101). The Sleeper will be staged November 16-18 (Thursday-Saturday) at 7:30 p.m., followed by a 2 p.m. Sunday matinee on November 19.
This production is part of the actors workshop series offered throughout the year. The workshop is a “pay what you will” event, meaning the audience members may contribute any donation amount, which will go to support the Lone Star College–Montgomery theatre department.
Chase Waites, assistant professor of drama, emphasizes the importance of the MC Actors Workshop experience.
“The actors are the focus in this type of lab setting,” he said. “We minimize the peripherals and concentrate on character development. The students are forced to rely on themselves and their training, rather than detailed sets, costumes, and stage props.”
The Sleeper follows the life of a suburban “security mom,” shell-shocked by the new post-9/11 reality, who finds herself irresistibly drawn to her son’s tutor, a handsome young man with political leanings far different from her own. Her “awakening” leads to a bizarre series of events that blow the lid off her previously sheltered existence and change the lives of all around her.
“It’s a dark and slightly zany comedy, “ said Waites. “We chose this production because of its contemporary relevance to life and its quirky twist on fate. The script is smart and very funny. We invite our campus and community to take advantage of the ‘pay as you will’ contribution to our theatre department.”
This production is intended for mature audiences and contains adult situations and language.
