Chemistry Courses

LSC-Montgomery currently offers six chemistry classes. All courses, with the exception of Introduction to Organic and Biochemistry, are suitable for transfer. The general and organic classes are suitable for chemistry majors. All courses serve as support courses for various allied health programs.

Chem 1405 (Introductory Chemistry): This class is designed for people who have not had a chemistry course in the past three years. It covers topics such as the states of matter, measurement, chemical reactions, atomic structure, and solutions. A student who completes this class is ready for Chem 1411 or Chem 1419.

Chem 1411 (General Chemistry I): This class plus Chem 1412 comprise the general chemistry sequence at Montgomery. These classes will transfer as general chemistry classes to a four-year institution. Topics covered include stoichiometry, thermochemistry, atomic structure and bonding, gases, liquids, and solids.

Chem 1412 (General Chemistry II): Topics covered include kinetics, equilibrium, acids and bases, and electrochemistry.

Chem 1419 (Introduction to Organic and Biochemistry): This class is aimed primarily at allied heath students. It covers topics similar to those of organic chemistry, but with more emphasis on biochemistry, and less on mechanism and synthesis.

Chem 2423 (Organic Chemistry I): This class plus Chem 2425 comprise the organic chemistry sequence at Montgomery. These classes will transfer as organic chemistry classes to a four-year institution. Topics covered include the chemistry of hydrocarbons, alkyl halides, and aromatic compounds. This course also covers stereochemistry, spectroscopy, and organic synthesis.

Chem 2425 (Organic Chemistry II): Topics covered include alcohols, carbonyl compounds, amines, and biochemistry.

All courses offered have both a lecture and laboratory component.

Chem 1405, 1411, 1412 are offered throughout the year, including the summer. Chem 2423 and 2425 are offered during the regular school year. Chem 1419 is presented as needed, usually once a year.
