Statement of Accreditation
In order to work as a licensed vocational nurse, a person must be licensed by the State of Texas. To take the national licensing examination (NCLEX-PN), a person must be a graduate of a LVN educational program, which is accredited. The LVN program at Lone Star College Systems -LSC-CyFair, LSC-Kingwood, LSC-Montgomery and LSC-Tomball is accredited by the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners. A person who has been convicted of a felony that relates to the duties and responsibilities of the LVN, may be disqualified from obtaining licensure by the Board of Vocational Nurse Examiners. In addition, applicants who have been treated for psychiatric illness or drug or alcohol abuse within the past three years may also be ineligible for licensure. Applicants with a felony or misdemeanor that does not relate to the duties of a nurse, or who have been treated for mental illness or drug or alcohol dependency will be required to submit documentation related to their circumstances. All candidates for licensure will undergo DPS and FBI background checks.Background Checks
All nursing students will be required to submit a background check from the nursing program's approved vendors. Applicants who are aware of former offenses should proceed with the Declaratory process through the BNE prior to the application process. See BNE web address above.Health & Immunization Status
Students must be physically and emotionally able to meet all program requirements, including the rendering of safe nursing care in the clinical setting. Nursing care involves exposure to patients with infectious and blood-borne diseases. After acceptance, students are required to submit documentation of a physical examination and immunizations according to current standards and facility requirements. The Texas Department of Health now requires students to have Hepatitis B vaccination completion prior to direct patient contact. Applicant must show proof of start of Hepatitis B vaccinatin at tim eof application. In addition, it is required that students submit documentation of current CPR training designed for Health-Care Providers.Professional Liability Insurance
All Vocational Nursing students are required to carry professional liability insurance. This fee is attached to your clinical courses in summer and fall and covers the student throughout the program.Comprehensive Exit Exam
Students are required to pass a comprehensive exit exam prior to program completion. The cost to the student for the test is approximately $30. Students who do not pass this exam are required to remediate before graduation. Students will have a total of three opportunities to achieve this competency.Student Conduct
Any student violating any applicable policy shall be subject to discipline, including suspension, in accordance with Board policy and applicable law. In the event that a violation of policy is also a violation of State or Federal law, the College may decide to proceed or delay its own disciplinary processes. Applicants to the nursing program are expected to conduct themselves professionally. Applicants who become disruptive may not have their applications considered.Progression Requirements
To remain in good standing and progress within the Vocational Nursing Program curriculum, students must maintain a “C” (75%) average in ALL Vocational Nursing courses. |
