Admissions Process
Before an applicant will be considered for admission into the Teacher Certification Program, all items listed below must be submitted. Please mail or deliver to the Alternative Teacher Certification Program in Building C, Office 231E.
- Completed application with $40 non-refundable fee
- 3 references (form included in application packet must be sent directly by each reference; forms may be mailedm emailed or faxed)
- Resume including work experience and skills (does not need to relate to education)
- Official transcripts from an accredited college or university showing bachelor’s degree and required number of hours in the certification area.
Note: Applicants who possess credentials from a university outside of the United States must obtain an original, course-by-course evaluation for professional licensing of all college-level credits prepared by an acceptable credential evaluation service. The evaluation must be signed by an authorized representative of the evaluation service and must verify that the applicant holds the equivalent to a bachelor's degree granted by an accredited institution of higher education in the United States, including the month, day, and year that the degree was conferred. - Basic Skills Assessment (one of the following)
- THEA (formerly TASP) scores of at least 250 on the Reading portion, 240 on the Writing portion, and 250 on the Math portion
- SAT scores from a single sitting in the last five years must equal at least 1070 with at least 500 per section
- ACT scores from a single sitting in the last five years must equal at least 23 with at least 19 per section
- GRE scores from a single sitting in the last five years must total at least 1000 on Verbal and Analytical sections
- MAT scores from a single sitting in the last five years must total at least 35
- If you don't have scores less than 5 years old on one of these exams, we recommend you take the Quick THEA- offered on our campus 5 days a week. See the FAQ section for more details
- A master's degree is no longer accepted in place of a basic skills assessment.
- English Language Assessment (one of the following)
- Earned college degree from an English-speaking institution. If earned outside of the U.S., transcripts must be in English and include a letter from the university stating all instruction was in English
- Passing score on Test of Spoken English (TSE)
- Passing Score on Phone Pass Spoken English Test administered by LSC-Montgomery
- Foreign Language Assessment - only required for bilingual and foreign language certification (one of the following)
- Earned college degree from an institution where instruction was completed primarily in the language for which certification is being sought
- Passing Score on Phone Pass Spoken Spanish Test administered by LSC-Montgomery (only for bilingual and Spanish certification)
- Passing Score on foreign language assessment completed by a LSC-Montgomery foreign language specialist
- Screening Interview - LSC-Montgomery program staff will call to schedule interviews after the application deadline.
