Dr. Thomas Butler is president of Lone Star College-Montgomery, a position he assumed in September of 2002.

Dr. Butler is active in the community, serving on the boards of Montgomery United Way (2006 vice-chair); Greater Conroe Economic Development Council; South Montgomery County Woodlands Chamber; Greater Conroe-Lake Conroe Chamber (ex-officio); Montgomery County Hispanic Chamber (ex-officio); Education for Tomorrow Alliance (2006 chair); American Heart Association of Montgomery County; and HEART of Montgomery County, a coalition dedicated to providing accessible, responsible and affordable health care. Dr. Butler is also a member of Montgomery County’s Transportation Task Force. In 2004-05, Dr. Butler was campaign chair for Montgomery County United Way, and is currently serving again as campaign chair for 2006-07.

Previously, Dr. Butler served as provost of the Annandale campus of Northern Virginia Community College, located in the Washington, D.C. suburbs. As provost, Dr. Butler served as CEO of a campus of 14,000 students from 150 different countries, provided leadership to an extensive workforce development program, and was active in the communities the college served.

Dr. Butler began his career teaching economics part-time in community colleges in the North Texas area, and at the University of North Texas. His first full-time teaching assignment was in Hampton, Virginia, at Thomas Nelson Community College. He later served as director of research for International Data Bank, was a public sector management consultant for the Commonwealth of Virginia, and served as assistant commissioner of the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry.

Dr. Butler is a native Texan, attended public schools in Carrollton, Texas, and received B.A. and M.S. degrees in economics from the University of North Texas. He holds a doctorate in higher education from the College of William and Mary in Virginia.
