The Center for Creative Discovery at Lone Star College-Montgomery is preparing for its 12th year of summer programs for youth. In addition to the nearly 50 classes that are offered as part of the traditional two-week camp sessions (June 9-19 and July 7-17), the college also offers 14 separate “intensive” camp programs throughout the summer. Registration begins Saturday, April 19, from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. in Building A (first floor Commons) and early registration is highly recommended for best classes/camp selection. The specialized intensive camp programs include:
- Broadway Connection (July 21-25)
- School of Rock (June 23-27 or July 28-August 1)
- Fencing (July 28-August 1)
- Theatre (July 28-August 1)
- Soccer – Boys & Girls (June 23-27)
- RoboCamp (June 23-27 or July 21-25)
- RoboCamp – Advanced (June 23-27 or July 21-25)
- Conversational Spanish (July 21-25)
- Basics of Algebra (July 21-31)
- Technology Workshop (June 23-27 or July 21-25)
- Creative Drawing & Multimedia Painting (July 21-25)
- Conversational ESL (June 23-27)
- Creative Writing (July 21-31)
- Chinese (June 23-27)
“In addition to adding new classes for our traditional two-week camp, we’ve also added some new intensive camps, such as Creative Writing, Soccer, and Chinese,” said Layton Gill, program manager for CE youth and leisure. “Many parents realize the importance of learning Chinese, which is becoming an increasingly global language. Likewise, the ability to write in creative ways is another important skill that can be developed at a young age. And, soccer is a universal sport that promotes lots of exercise. Our three new programs are a nice addition to our camp lineup.”
Another addition is the Summer Camp Movie Festival. Designed for those in grades 4-8, the festival includes four movies (Tuesdays and Thursdays) shown prior to the start of the traditional two-week camps. For just $12, campers can watch “Happy Feet,” “Over the Hedge,” “The Ant Bully,” and “Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were Rabbit.” The movies run from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and campers must be registered for the two-week camp session, which immediately follows the movie.
The traditional two-week sessions, priced at $195, are divided into two age groups: grades 4-5 (as of Fall 2008) and grades 6-8. These camps run from 1-5 p.m., with campers choosing three classes in a variety of subject areas, ranging from science, technology, art, sports, math, and more. The age limit and price for the intensive camps vary depending on the camp.
