Phlebotomy Workforce Skills Award
If you have an interest in the healthcare industry and like the idea of a hands-on job, then consider earning a Phlebotomy Workforce Skills Award.
Phlebotomist are healthcare professionals who have been trained to obtain blood specimens by venipuncture and by microcollection techniques in phlebotomy. They receive special training in how to best obtain that sample. Having blood drawn is rarely a pleasurable experience, but a well-trained phlebotomist can help ease the pain - literally!
Lone Star College-Montgomery's Phlebotomy program provides students with the skills necessary to perform a variety of blood collection methods using proper techniques and universal precautions. Students receive classroom training and clinical experience learning specimen collection on adults, children and infants.
Upon completion of the program, students are ready to work in a variety of medical settings including hospitals, private doctors' offices, dialysis clinics, blood donation centers or even as contractors for large blood collection laboratories (such as LabCorp or Quest Diagnostics).
Students pursuing nursing or other medical degrees also find that phlebotomy training can quickly provide them with enough skills to work in a healthcare setting while continuing their education goals.
Although certification testing is not required in the State of Texas, trained phlebotomists may opt to sit for one of many national certification exams in this growing medical specialization.
