Image of HVACWould you like to enter a profession that will keep you busy during every season of the year?

Do you want a career that gives you the satisfaction of diagnosing and repairing equipment?

Are you looking to enter an established industry that offers longevity and a good salary?  Then consider training for a career as a heating, ventilation, air conditioning & refrigeration (HVACR) technician- one of several workforce skills awards programs offered by Lone Star College-Montgomery.

HVACR technicians enjoy a busy market year round. Approved by the ESCO Institute - the national HVACR industry leader in certification - the LSC-Montgomery HVACR workforce skills award is offered through two modules consisting of 80 contact hours each.

The first module is exclusively electrical with the second involving refrigeration and chilling systems. The HVACR certificate program prepares the individual for basic, entry-level employment in the residential or light commercial heating and air-conditioning service industry. The essentials of the mechanical and electrical systems of contemporary air-conditioning and heating systems are addressed throughout the program.

One of the more recent specialized requirements of an HVACR technician is to coordinate the air conditioning and heating equipment in cooperation with the other electronic devices included in a ‘smart home,' which translates into the need for highly skilled workers.

The LSC-Montgomery program offers top notch training equipment that includes a specially-designed refrigeration display, which is essentially a stand-alone HVAC system. Graduates from the HVACR program can expect to be hired by industry or general building contractors, and after two years of work experience, can take the written exam for the Texas Air-Conditioning Contractors license.

How long does it take to complete the program?
The HVACR skills award consists of two courses comprising 16.0 Continuing Education Units (CEUs). What is the cost to complete the program? Approximately $492. (Not including textbooks or materials.)
Is financial aid available?

How is the job market?

Heating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics and installers held about 270,000 jobs in 2004. A growing number of retirements of highly skilled technicians are expected to generate many job openings.

According to the America's Career InfoNet Occupation Report, there will be a 19 percent increase in this field over the next seven years and in Texas, HVACR technicians average $17.55 an hour and can earn more than $27.09 an hour, plus special overtime pay of time and a half.

Beginning hourly wages in this field range from approximately $10.42 to $20.83. Many companies provide medical insurance for the employee and sometimes for their families for an additional amount. Other benefits include paid vacation, sick days and holidays.
