The Language & Culture Institute, an initiative of the Behavioral, English, Language, and Speech Division, focuses on meeting the needs of language learners in open enrollment courses for individuals and customized training for groups:
Open Enrollment Continuing Education courses
Open enrollment courses are listed in the Lifelong Learning catalog published in the fall, spring, and summer. Open enrollment may be Linked to college credit, workforce, and leisure courses. Each has its purpose and addresses the needs of the learner in a unique way. Linked courses are designed for students who desire a rigorous academic experience; prerequisites must be met; workforce courses are focused on employment & career readiness amd may even target a specific occupation; leisure courses are for personal enrichment with no prerequisites. The hourly rate for tuition for courses varies and is set by Lone Star College System; textbooks may be purchased by from the college bookstore at the following link with the course number. http://www.efollett.com/
Customized Training
The institute designs and delivers customized language courses to meet your group's specific needs. Sessions can take place at your location or in our classrooms; online and hybrid (combination of online and clasroom instruction) are also available. Examples of customized courses: Portuguese for Technical Occupations, Hotel English, English for Safety in the Workplace, Command Spanish for Nurses, Pronunciation Tutorials, and Conversational Medical Spanish.
Registration Procedures:
LINKED COURSES
- Credit courses offer limited enrollment to Continuing Education students
- Tuition is the same as credit class, although CE students do not pay out-of-district tuition; courses may have lecture and lab
- Bring an unofficial transcript at time of registration to show prerequisites have been met
- The first day of class, students receive a course syllabus; completing all course assignments, including tests, are required; however, Continuing Education students are awarded CEUs.
- One CEU is equal to 10 contact hours of successful completion of the requirements of a Continuing Education course. CEUs are recognized internationally as a measure of professional education and training.
- Certificate for successful completers are provided. The grade (S = Satisfactory or N = Not Completed) will be posted on the transcript; however, it does not affect college credit academic standing.
- Some courses are only every semester and others are offered in sequence. For example, French I in the fall; French II in the spring.
- Linked courses enrollments are closed after the second meeting day. No refunds are provided after the first day of class regardless of the reason for non-attendance.
- Most courses require purchase of a book; using the course number, search the link below to find the book title and cost.
Obtaining CEUs
SBEC (State Board for Educator Certification) recognizes Lone Star College System as an approved Continuing Education Provider(500506).
