Lone Star College-Montgomery's engineering program offers students a chance to start their engineering curriculum at a school focused on student learning. The benefits are obvious. Freshman and sophomore engineering classes can be completed
- close to home
- at a much lower cost than a four-year university
- with small class sizes (low student-to-teacher ratios)
- with top-notch instruction.
Rather than the typical schedule of an engineering transfer student who spends several semesters taking Engineering 101 trying to catch up, a student of LSC-Montgomery's engineering program can walk right into sophomore- and junior-level courses.
What do engineers do?
Engineers work in a variety of fields, including areas such as civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical, aerospace, biomedical, industrial, and several others. Inside of these fields, engineers can be managers, marketers, designers, customer support personnel, trainers, testers or take on almost any other role in the production of architectural structures, computer chips, automobiles, aircraft, computers, artificial hearts, or just about anything you can image. Maybe a better question is, "What can't an engineer do?"
How is the job market?
The technology industry is booming in Texas. As a result, there are literally thousands of high-paying jobs in technology going unfilled because there are not enough adequately educated or trained young people to fill them. (Houston Chronicle, Feb. 2001). The rapid growth of technology has created a high demand for qualified people in all areas of engineering. A high demand for engineers results in higher pay. Starting salaries for engineers can range up to $100,000 annually.
Where do I go after I complete my coursework at LSC-Montgomery?
Once you have finished up your work here, your courses can transfer to engineering programs at many universities across the country. Inside of Texas, quality engineering education is available at a variety of four-year institutions.
Should I take freshman- and sophomore-level engineering classes at LSC-Montgomery, or should I wait until I transfer?
Take your classes at LSC-Montgomery! While you are taking other core curriculum classes, enroll in engineering courses as well. The courses offered here are almost identical to those classes at several universities, and taking them here will save you 2-4 semesters that may be wasted while you are catching up after you transfer.
Would I like the field of engineering?
Engineering is the application of science and math to solve real-world problems. Engineers typically enjoy working with numbers, finding solutions to problems, and innovating. If this sounds like you, check out engineering!
